DIRECTIONS
Directions to Riverton
Wyoming
Riverton Wyoming is in the west central portion of the state. When coming
from out-of-state it is accessed most easily from Interstate 80 from Evanston,
Rock Springs and Lander from the west of the state. From the east, Cheyenne
gives the quickest route, by going through Casper, Shoshoni and then to
Riverton or by following the Interstate farther west to Rawlins and then
to Muddy Gap, Sweetwater Station and then to Riverton. Coming from the
north you will pass through Sheridan and Buffalo on Interstate 25 to Casper
where you will again go west to Shoshoni. If coming from the north east,
follow Interstate 90 through Spearfish, South Dakota where it will join
I-25 at Buffalo, going south to Casper.
Directions to Martin's
Cove
Starting at the Stake Center in Riverton Wyoming go south and turn on
to highway 135. Highway 135 will lead you up Sand Draw and to Sweetwater
Station where you will turn east onto highway 789. Following 789 you will
come to Muddy Gap where you will turn northeast onto highway 220. Martin's
Cove Visitor Center road signs will indicate where to turn but watch carefully
for them. If you reach Independence Rock you have gone too far and will
need to turn back. Missionary couples will be present to greet you and
give directions to restrooms, the visitor center and where to get handcarts
to trek into the cove which can be done both summer and winter.
Directions to
Rock Creek
From the
Riverton Stake Center go south to Lander on highway 789 to Lander. Follow
the highway through Lander to highway 287 leading southeast. Follow
highway 287 where you will see the turn out to Atlantic City on the
east side of the road. The paved road will turn into a dirt road leading
through Atlantic City. This road will take you past the Atlantic City
Mercantile where you will take a left going south. Follow this dirt
road with caution because of washouts and washboard roads. Do not go
off this road till it forks where you should take the left hand road.
This road will take you directly to the campground of Rock Creek.

PREPARING FOR YOUR
PIONEER EXPERIENCE
To make sure you fully
enjoy your treks into Martin's Cove, Rock Creek and Rocky Ridge we have
a few suggestions as to clothing and vehicles.
- Please wear comfortable
walking shoes! The terrain is rugged and can easily cause blisters
and sore feet.
- Bring a hat and
sunscreen. Elevation is high and exposure can easily cause sunburn
and sun illnesses.
- A warm windbreaker
or jacket is necessary even in warmer months. Wyoming has ever changing
weather of wind, storms and sunshine, some protection from the elements
will be needed.
- Please make sure
your vehicle has a spare tire and changing equipment. Going slow on
dirt roads can save you from a flat tire so please take your time
and be aware of driving conditions.
- Check all vehicle
fluids. Wyoming is a wide open space and will not always have a tow
truck or help available.
- Please remember
to bring plenty of water and food in case of any unforeseen delays.
Also if you have a cell phone handy, please make sure that batteries
are charged if you must call for help.
- Let someone know
when you are leaving, when you are returning and where you will be
in case of emergency.
Reading the stories
of the pioneers will help make your pioneer experience more meaningful.
These stories can be found on this site as well as in the Remember
book. Please direct all questions to the Missionary couples at Martin's
Cove or contact the Riverton Stake Presidency.
